I'd like to see an "X" on the tag bar next to each tag so that I can delete them as needed. I like to use a "todo" tag that I need to remove when the task is completed. This is something that really did not get any easier with the new site layout.

This might make a good Greasemonkey script.

Thanks for the suggestion - this is something we thought about. Also consider, though, that some people have thousands and thousands of tags, and adding an "edit" button to each one could add significantly to page weight.

I uploaded my bookmarks and they turned into a zillion tags.

I really badly need a way to mass delete them. A mass delete page where you could click on one tag after another, and then hit "delete all checked" would do the trick.

    Otherwise, I have to:
    >select an item from a drop down
    >hit the delete button
    >answer yes, I really am not an idiot and do want to delete it
    >click "delete another tag"

    This is tedious beyond belief.

gustnado: Sounds like you chose "add popular tags" - that does add a lot of tags. We're working on a Bulk Edit feature that will help with this in the future.

Gustnado hit the nail on the head with a jolly big hammer! This feature needs to be here like yesterday!! Imagine you had to delete every single one of your old emails individually, or every single file/folder you want to delete from your HD or every song from your current favorites playlist. Without this, the popular tags functions turns from being a highly useful tool into a cumbersome obstacle.

so, why is this feature still not available... six months later...

Another import can fix things if the problem was caused by import's "add popular tags" option. Here's what you can do:

    Visit https://secure.delicious.com/settings/profile/import
Select the custom or manual import, if one or both options are present.
Make sure these settings are set this way:

Off: "Automatically add the most popular tags for each bookmark"
On: "Replace existing Delicious bookmarks with these bookmarks."
  3.
Can you just allow multiple select using shift-click or control-click to the Delete Tag dropdown? Surely that's the simplest solution.

any progress on this? deleting tags 1 by 1 is insane.

You might want to try using the Bulk Edit feature (located in the light blue box at the top right of your Bookmarks page or tag pages) - it provides an alternative way to delete tags. This is still not as convenient as it could be, but we're thinking about it.

I'm sorry, I may have been unclear. By "tag page" I mean pages like http://delicious.com/[username]/[tag] - which list your bookmarks with a specific tag. You can find the Bulk Edit link on those pages.

We don't yet have a Bulk Edit feature on http://delicious.com/tags/[username] or the tag rename/delete pages (like https://secure.delicious.com/settings/tags/delete).
